Prior to last Thursday evening, I had never really thought about trying to make my own cosmetics. I always had this notion that it would be super complicated; require tons of ‘specialist’ ingredients and that I would probably end up coming out in the worst case of Hives….EVER! So when I read the tag line…..
“Why bother buying expensive, potentially harmful & animal tested cosmetics when you can make some yourself, using only natural ingredients, saving money and the planet, too?”
I signed up for the 2nd in a series of Orla workshops to see how I could become a ‘gourmet’ of the bathroom realm!
Anna describes herself, quite adorably, as a, “Vintage aromatherapist.” She is one of the leading Scandinavian pioneers in aromatherapy, having studied since the late 1980’s, and ran the Swedish aromatherapy association from 1994 to 1997. In short, Anna knows her STUFF and her passion for aromatherapy and essential oils is completely addictive.
The participants at the workshop were a diverse mix of nationalities, backgrounds and cultures, but all with the shared interest in living a more Mindful Life. Unsurprisingly, there was a lack of men participating – ‘Come on guys, you need this stuff too!’, so we were encouraged to entice our male friends to the next workshop! It shouldn’t be that hard to do as the workshop is at Ready?! Yummy food and drinks, fabulous atmosphere, need I say more? Connie and Yuki you know I love you!
Anyways, back to the workshop….Linda ‘expertly’ demonstrated how simple , cheap and easy it is to make your own cosmetics with just a few basic ingredients.
I’ve always loved using coconut oil in vegan recipes but I never realised what wonders it does for your hair and skin. Turns out, it is the elixir of the bathroom cabinet and if you do nothing else, you should definitely invest in some!
Linda started by making a Chai sugar body scrub which was not only super simple to make but smelt so much like cookie dough you wanted to eat it and lick the bowl afterwards! In fact all the products Linda made smelt good enough to eat, but best to keep them for your body….your stomach will Thank you for it!
One thing you need to have when experimenting with bathroom cosmetics …is an open mind! Remember, this stuff is natural, not full of unpronounceable chemicals that do funky stuff to your body.
Does ‘natural’ homemade toothpaste froth in your mouth? No! Does it taste darn good? Hell Yeah!
As with any ‘life’ change, there is a transition period you have to go through, so be patient, you will get use to it and your body will love you for it.
Throughout the workshop, Anna was on hand to share her years of experience. Anna explained ‘exactly’ how each of the ingredients benefit your body/hair and what to do and not to do when making them! Anna recommended that when making any of the cosmetics, it was best practice to test them on the skin on the inside of your arm to see if there is any reaction. You should also use essential oils sparingly!
Nowadays there is a growing trend to drown yourself in essential oils, but REMEMBER, these are natural chemicals and if not applied properly can cause havoc on your body! Go easy on this stuff, you can always add a little more if needed! Even better yet, you can make a personalised appointment to see Anna at Aromalux and find out what combinations are right for you!
I left the workshop with a notebook full of advice, a deep curiosity for homemade cosmetics and a renewed appreciation for the wonders of the botanical world.
To top it all off, Orla presented us each with a ‘personalised’ goodie box and all the recipes to try at home!
