Don’t you just love it when, on a very normal day, between two emails and two clicks, you accidentally stumble across something beautiful on the internet?
Well, it’s even better when you find out it’s regional, new, and 100% handmade, like… frisch Beutel. A whole new brand, with an interesting point of view, founded by two young women, who happen to be super cool. Creating really beautiful, handmade bags with style and personality. Simple, elegant and made to last, using only ethically sourced & quality materials. Those who know me, know I definitely fall for these kinds of things. I also believe that in order to reduce our ecological footprint as consumers, we need to stop purchasing crap, and go for things that are made & react sustainably, contrary to our cheap “throwaway” culture. I also think it’s great to promote a local or regional young brand, encouraging the founders, but also inspire new future “mindful” entrepreneurs to be!
So I thought I’d go ahead and interview them so I’d get to know more, share it with the Orla Collective community, and possibly a bit of Luxembourg in general!
Tell us a little about frisch Beutel!
Frisch is a new brand which was founded in January 2015 by me (Lisa Frisch, fashion designer) and Katharina Pfaff (graphic designer).
We introduced a new product named „frisch Beutel“ : The companion for every day combines real sustainable leather and selected fabrics. The zipper bag at the front ensures functionality and limited editions make it unique. We create our own handmade products in our small studio in the west of Germany, not far from Luxembourg actually!
How did you come to create Frisch Beutel?
We thought about a nice and useful bag made of high quality materials which is useful for many occasions, like riding your bicycle, skating, hiking, sitting in a Café and so on.
So we started one year ago to design a frisch Beutel for our best friend. Since then she used this bag every day and it still works. In between we gave a lot of bags as birthday presents to our friends and friends or family members of them contacted us with the intention to get one of these frisch Beutel. In this way we found out that there is a great demand for the product and we started thinking about making this great product official. Everyone should have a frisch Beutel. It’s the perfect companion for every day.
What inspires you?
We get a lot of inspiration from traveling and watching our environment. Also we get many new insights from the different jobs we make like working at a film set, in a graphic agency or as we visited the great fabric fair „première vision“ in Paris in February. But sometimes great ideas come to your mind during you take a hot shower, order the third beer or seek professional help from a cosmetician… it always happens!
What values are important in your philosophy?
Frisch design means quality materials and regional production.
Innovation and suitability for daily use are important for our handcrafted products. The editions of our bags are limited depending on how much leather and fabric we have in stock. So that we can offer a piece of individuality to our costumers.
Do you consider yourselves being part of a new movement around sustainability & hand crafting?
For sure. There exists a new movement around sustainability and hand crafting and although sometimes you cannot hear anymore about healthy food, sustainable living, regional products and so on, it is the right way for a better future. We believe in regional manufacturing and high quality materials for long-lasting products instead of mass production. We think everyone can get involved and make a personal contribution.
Tell us a bit about you. How did you meet?
We first met in school when we were 15 years old. In the beginning we didn’t really like each other but later it turned into the opposite: a long lasting friendship and growing up together. During our studies we shared a flat and a lot of „ups and downs“ with each other. We already worked together in our Bachelor Thesis and founded the still fictitious label „frisch“ in this time. That was the point when we realized that we complement each other perfectly, also in working processes.
What is your favourite part of the process? What does a typical day at “Frisch Beutel” look like?
We cannot define that one favourite part of the working process but it was a really good feeling when we launched our online shop after three months of hard work. The nicest part is maybe when you have the final frisch Beutel in your hands. That exciting feeling that comes out of your ideas and materials. Also the period when we selected fabrics and leather at various retailers was really much fun. A typical day at „Frisch Beutel“ is organizing, handcrafting, designing and doing paperwork (drinking a lot of coffee as well). Its a good mixture of everything and we are looking forward to visit some design fairs in spring.
What are your plans for the future?
Our plans for the future are to spread frisch Beutel through Germany and the surrounding countries by selling them in selected shops in big cities like Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Luxemburg, Vienna and so on… We also want to participate in various design fairs, for example the „Stijl“ in Leipzig, that will take place in May 2015. New products are already planned. We think about other „frisch“ bags, like handbags, clutches, backpacks, but also about „frisch“ clothing. Maybe we use some new materials, like metallic leather or velvet. We´ll see what the future might bring.
What makes your day?
First a hot coffee haha. Without we cannot start anything. At the moment our days consists of doing that which we do best – create work that we love and respect. That is the best thing that can make your day, besides friends and family!
Do you enjoy a “mindful” lifestyle? What are your favourite ways to do so?
We think you have to begin on a small scale and we have to start by ourselves to contribute something to a „mindful“ world. We try to do things, like for example that we carry our own bags to go shopping and not to buy plastic bags. On saturdays we go to the market in our city to support the local traders. Considering Design products we want to provide regional manufacturers as well. For the future we want to find other people with the same ideas that we can work together with.
What do you like doing when you’re not working on “FrischBeutel”?
Oh there are a lot of things we like to do except of work, haha. We love to go on a hike in the Palatinate Forest with our family members or friends. In the lodges you can eat many regional specialties and you really have to drink wine spritzer. You see, we love our home area and the regional specifics here but what we also love is traveling to expand our horizon and see different things. In everyday life we often visit concerts, lectures or other cultural events but we also like to sit in various bars, drinking beer with our friends and hanging out.
