Hurray – we love green, creative, tasty and loving entrepreneurship! These were my thoughts when I visited Susanne’s new Raw Food Cafe “Rauw” in Rotterdam, NL. Located at the Deliplein in Katendrecht it is just a five-minute walk from the Hotel New York, the famous and very beautiful old harbor building where emigrants left Europe for New York.
While I pass the hotel I immediately sense a strong creative vibe in this area. Rotterdam’s trading monuments revived by small, young and creative companies. Industrial halls for local food markets, homemade food design and DIY interior…huh? Am I in Williamsburg NYC? or Berlin? No it is Rotterdam. And it’s the townsfolk energy, that rocks this place. It could be the shabbiest industrial place on earth but now, in this very moment, it’s the most uplifting one I can think of.
I enter Susanne’s cafe and it is absolutely fun to read her menu: Green juices, winter soups, almond chocolate milk, homemade granola, seed crackers with cashew ricotta and much more. Pure joy for a conscious foodie and for very reasonable prices!
I choose the warm raw chocolate Milk. Freshly made almond milk, dates for sweetness, raw cacao powder, maca and a cinnamon herbal blend – delicious… and just perfect for a Dutch winter day!
Susanne serves it in Ball mason Jars – which I find a very nice presentation. I take my first sips and we start a nice conversation.
I asked Susanne what ignited her venture into raw-food cuisine;
Pure passion for everything I put on the menu!
She says with a big smile.
Susanne loves to cook, to share knowledge and to celebrate homemade food together. She is doing so as a teacher at a Rudolf Steiner School and as a mother at home with her family. For a long time she knew she would like to bring her passion into bigger projects. And then life unfolded its possibilities. A shop next to the harbor got for sale. Grab your chance and Susanne did it. The money came from friends- and family crowd funding and the interior from skill-exchange-friendship deals:
You give me nourishing food and I’ll make you a chair.
One thing of her story stands out to me, if you want to see it, which is: Just ask! Many people will help you!
Susanne’s biggest inspiration for recipes and running a business comes from the Cafe Bliss in Victoria, B.C. / Canada. She visited this place for several times and felt in love with their wholesome approach.
So do I. When I read their welcoming words I can already smell and taste the food:
Let us nourish your body with our fresh, rejuvenating live food menu, and lift your spirits with our clean bright and friendly atmosphere and our vibrant service. Add some bliss to your day with our wide selection of fresh made fruit and vegetable juices, wheatgrass shots, raw chocolate shakes, super food smoothies, green juices, local salads, raw chocolates, warming soups, dairy-free milk shakes, delectable treats, cracker plates, pizza, seasonal specials, kids plates, cutting edge desserts, and more!
These sentences are inspiring for building up your own food business, right?
By learning from others we are able to recognize our abilities and possibilities. Somehow inspiration acts like a fire, which goes round and round between us. Luckily!
Because we cannot deny that there is a harsh aspect to it as well. It takes a lot of courage to guide a business, to make choices and to make the leap into cold water. Set up your route and swim…and so did Susanne. With no business background she is “just doing it” and guided by her intuition and daily practical experiences.
That way her cafe starts to be an inspiring place for others. Random visitors pass by; they try gourmet raw food and have a coffee afterwards. Their visit could turn out as a true inspiration and eye-opening experience for them. Other visitors find Susanne’s cafe via Happy Cow and are very thankful to have a stop at their favorite cuisine in order to enjoy their Rotterdam trip even more.
And while I’m sitting here with my delicious chocolate at these handmade modern tables, I feel a lot of gratitude for being surrounded by people like Susanne, who care about their dreams, contribute to a healthy lifestyle and the health of nature’s spaceship, Earth:) Who follow their passion, inspiration and wisdom. Then nourish us in a wholesome, tasty, colorful way. Thank you Susanne. May many people find your awesome place!
