Throughout my life I’ve had a lot of passions and interests, some of them I pursued , some forgot, then turned back to them again and abandoned again. When I was asked what my hobby is or what I want to do in my life, when I grow up,now, I was always unsure and could not think of less than 5 answers, which by the way changed almost every year. I’ve been always trying something new, different and could never stick to 1 thing and really be pasisonate about it and feel like it is mine, this is really me. I was always picking up some hobbies, was crazy about one thing then another then another and eventually forgot them all and ended up with nothing. I always thought of it as a disadvantage and thought that attitude like this will never help me to finally find my “one true calling” and actually achieve something in life, I considered myself a failure until one beautiful day I watched an amazing TED talk with a remarkable concept, that changed my self-image,it made me actually feel good about myself and I understood that these jumps for one thing to another, the interest in different things, this is actually a part of my personality.
I simply found out that I am a multipotentialite. Interesting, isn`t it? Maybe I am just trying to console myself like this, but it`s better to call yourself a multipotentialite, that a failure.
Have you read something that you can somehow relate to? Then watch this TED talk asap rocky and welcome to the club!
The definition of multipotentialite taken from the website of the speaker that I stalked for about a week and could relate to every single thing.
A MULTIPOTENTIALITE is a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life.
Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do. Being a multipotentialite is our destiny. We have many paths and we pursue all of them, either sequentially or simultaneously (or both).
Multipotentialites thrive on learning, exploring, and mastering new skills. We are excellent at bringing disparate ideas together in creative ways. This makes us incredible innovators and problem solvers.
When it comes to new interests that emerge, our insatiable curiosity leads us to absorb everything we can get our hands on. As a result, we pick up new skills fast and tend to be a wealth of information.
Fun fact: Apparently I was also born in wrong generation as back in Renaissance times, multipotentiality was considered the ideal:
The common term Renaissance man is used to describe a person who is well educated or who excels in a wide variety of subjects or fields. The idea developed in Renaissance Italy from the notion expressed by one of its most accomplished representatives, Leon Battista Alberti (1404–1472): that “a man can do all things if he will.” It embodied the basic tenets of Renaissance humanism, which considered humans empowered, limitless in their capacities for development, and led to the notion that people should embrace all knowledge and develop their capacities as fully as possible. Thus the gifted people of the Renaissance sought to develop skills in all areas of knowledge, in physical development, in social accomplishments, and in the arts.
(info from wikipedia)
Taking example from huge personalities like Isaac Newton,Aristotle,Leonardo DaVinci, a few modern examples include Oprah Winfrey,Steve Jobs and more and more inspiring creators (who were and are mulipotentialites) I know that I can stay true to all my likes and passions and actually make it work and make it my future and present,I can create something unique and extraordinary, without abandoning things that I like and feel like mine. I no longer feel obligated to choose one activity, one path, one job,one field, one interest, I no longer feel pressure of my own mind to focus on 1 thing, instead I devote myself to everything that touches and interests me even if its just for 1 week or so. I have decided to embrace my multipotentiality and I suggest you to do so as well.
Let’s all think outside the box,do something different everyday,do several things simultaneously,if you want so.
Break the old-fashioned rule of having just one true calling!!!
How about 2,3,5? How about creating something that nobody have ever heard before? How about being somebody have never been before? Embrace yourself, embrace your passions, create, invent, inspire widespread movements and mindset shifts in society but most importantly, STAY TRUE TO YOUR MULTIPOTENTILITE SELF.
Good luck with anything you decide to do and may the odds be ever in your favour!
